A Birthday Cake for Didier Drogba

Hi Cake Lovers,

Earlier on this year, Crumbs! had the privilege of providing cupcakes for the Didier Drogba Foundation Ball, as well as a birthday cake for the main man himself.

It all started on a rare night out in a rather flashy London restaurant with my husband. Across a sea of Chanel quilted bags, I spotted Didier dining with his wife in uber-trendy Novikov. The next day I followed his foundation on Twittter, at which point I was contacted and asked if I would like to be involved in their upcoming event. Would I ever?!

What made me want to help Didier is the fact that I feel he is one of the few footballers out there who, rather than boning their team-mate's girlfriend or getting hair transplants, is actually using their fame and wealth to make a real difference to the lives of many, many people in The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire.

We agreed to make lots of cupcakes for the event, featuring the foundation's logo and were super-chuffed to then get a call which made this job slightly more unusual. Didier's agency told me that the day after the ball was actually his birthday, therefore they wanted to present him with a cake as a surprise at midnight. WOW! Our cake was going to be eaten by a footballing legend?! Get in!

We were helped hugely with the cupcakes by Alison from A & M Sugarcraft as well as Hannah from Heavenly Tiers. All of the cupcakes were made in gold cases with fabulous personalised toppers.

Making Didier's birthday cake was such fun. To make it a personal fit for Didier, I suggested writing "Bon Anniversaire" on it rather than "Happy Birthday", which his representatives LOVED. It was a Belgian Chocolate Ruffle Cake, topped with plenty of edible bling to ensure it really sparkled on the night.
The party itself was at the Dorchester on Park Lane. The venue looked absolutely stunning!
The event was attended by lots of Didier's Chelsea team-mates as well as various other celebrities, including Christine Bleakley, Whitney Port, Estelle, Wretch 32, Donna Air and Princess Beatrice.

Our cupcakes were a HUGE hit on the night, with many tweets coming in from various guests that loved them!

At midnight, Didier was presented with his Crumbs! Couture birthday cake.... Look at that smile!

All in all, it was a great day for Didier; Not only did he score his 100th Premier League goal, his 3rd Charity Ball brought the total raised to over £1 million AND he got a birthday cake from Crumbs!

What's that, Didier? You want a hug? Oh, go on then!
