Cupcakes, The Olympics and Trademarks.

Hello Cake Lovers!

A fortnight ago, we were called with a request to make cupcakes for a party which had an Olympics Theme. The Birthday Boy is performing in the Olympics opening ceremony, and so he specifically wanted all of his cupcakes to feature the Olympics rings on them.

We had a quick look on the web and saw that many cupcake companies had done this, and so off we trotted to make 500 rings out of coloured fondant! After sending the cupcakes off, we tweeted a few pictures to show our followers what we had been up to. Cue barrage of tweets regarding trademarks!!

Many of the tweets, which sent us links to a story about warnings sent to the British Sugarcraft Guild, were genuine warnings about possibly getting into trouble with the IOC. A number were less friendly, and send from the cake-makers who seem to patrol my timeline for material to discuss in cake forums and only ever get in touch to criticise!

There are many cake decorators who recreate popular characters and logos on their cupcakes. I very much doubt that each cupcake maker who has ever made a Hello Kitty cake or Angry Birds cupcakes have sought prior permission from Sanrio or Rovio Mobile. The difference seems to be that, when it comes to the Olympics rings, the trademark is enforced in a more vehement fashion.

It seems as though we will have to stick to making Union Jacks for the Olympics. It's not such a bad thing; those rings were ridiculously fiddly!!

Bespoke Couture Cupcakes: Guitars and Lovebirds...

Last week we were contacted by the lovely Banita from Premier PR who told us about a client of their who was launching an exciting new product. For the product launch, Premier PR wanted lots of our little boxes containing 2 of our cupcakes, one of which was to feature a guitar, the other to feature a lovebird. An unusual combination, but as you know, at "Crumbs!" we are used to all sorts of requests, so off we went. Here are the results:

We think these cupcakes are rather "tweet" :)

Feedback from the client was fab, which was "music to our ears"...

Beautiful Blooms at Brocket

The Designer Wedding Show: My top Picks!

Now that Valentines Day Mayhem has subsided, I can tell you about the wonderful Designer Wedding Show, which I attended last Sunday.

This show, which takes place in Battersea Park, has always been one of my favourite wedding shows as I feel that it has a gentle, calm and refined atmosphere. It is extremely different to some of the mainstream wedding shows, some of which feel a little like hypermarkets when compared to this event.

There was a huge range of wedding exhibitors and sadly I did not get a chance to speak to them all. Here are my top picks:

1. Bridal Couture: Sassi Holford

Sassi Holford's designs combine the traditional with the edgy and are the perfect choice for today's chic bride. The fabrics were divine, and I was impressed by the numerous options for a bride who wanted a range of colours, such as champagne/gold. http://www.sassiholford.com/

2. Wedding Jewellery: Hermione Harbutt

My inner magpie, coupled with my love for intricate handiwork drew me to the stand of Hermione Harbutt. Her designs are timeless, meaning that they are wonderful pieces to hold on to for generations. Two things are apparent when you look at her products. Firstly it is immediately clear how much effort and passion has gone into the production of each item. 3. Bridesmaid's Services: Maids to Measure

What is not to love about the wonderful bridesmaid service from Maids to Measure? For starters, Sinclair, who is one half of the pair behind this brand, is an ex-lawyer like yours truly. Their dresses combine great quality with affordable pricing. Best of all, the design process can be done entirely by the bride and her bridesmaids, meaning that you can create bespoke dresses for your exact requirements! Cue happy bridesmaids and happy bride! 4. Event Planners: By Appointment Only Design

If asked to name one stand at the show that had an immediate WOW factor, it would have to be the stunning display of By Appointment Only Design. Their stand featured the most gorgeous blooms in various pastel hues. My favourite aspect was the floral table runner, which was pretty enough to make me want to get married all over again!! 5. Wedding Stationery: Intricate Create

"Intricate Creations" was born when a wonderful couple decided to fill a gap in the market, one which became apparent when they were planning their own wedding! Their designs are the perfect fusion of East and West, and their finishing is just exquisite. I have always been a fan of their huge range of colours and styles. Just when I think they have nailed it, they show me one of their latest products which surpasses my already high opinion of their work. 6. Venue: The May Fair

If I had to sum up this venue in 3 words, I would say Glamorous, Luxurious and Unique. I had my pre-wedding party in the Crystal Room of this gorgeous hotel and I would recommend it to anyone. 7. Marquee: The Raj Tent Club

I met the team from Raj Tent Club back in 2010 at a wedding show I was exhibiting at, and instantly fell in love with their colourful and decorative marquees. When I got married later on that year, I was lucky enough to have one of their marquees in the back garden of my parents house, which was a great place for us to relax, eat, drink and perform some of the wedding traditions that were done at home during my 6-event wedding extravaganza! It was also where I attempted to sit still for 3 hours getting my henna done! They provided us with a range of traditional furniture which all complemented the marquee beautifully. I loved that marquee so much! Here is a pic of the pavilion marquee we had as well as some pictures of me in the marquee on the morning of my Sikh wedding day!!

Right, enough reminiscing!! In summary, it was a pleasure to meet so many fabulous wedding suppliers as well as to watch the floaty romantic gowns that graced the catwalk shows. I am already excited about next year's show!

I am chuffed to tell you that Crumbs has been asked to team up with the Cake and Bake Show, which takes place in September this year at Earls Court! http://thecakeandbakeshow.co.uk/

I am really excited about this event as it is the first live event that is dedicated to baking and cake decoration. Ruffles & Buttons! Crumbs Couture Cake

Hello Cake Fans!

We have been very busy in the Crumbs! Kitchen and have launched a range of "big cakes". The style of our larger cakes is a little different to the rest of them out there! I am not the hugest fan of rigid overly manicured designs, and so our cakes look a little "softer".

Below is a picture of our signature ruffle cake. It is 4 tiers of vanilla sponge, with white Vanilla buttercream ruffles. The ruffles can be done in any colour, and also look great in pastels. This cake has been finished with some pink fondant buttons. I think this cake would be perfect for a pink-themed retro wedding, a birthday or a baby shower....

4 tier Victoria Sponge cake with berries

Today we decided to try something different from the cupcakes which we make all of the time...

We wanted to make a big cake, but one that was slightly different! I have never been a fan of overly manicured wedding cakes, and so it only seemed right that my attempt would be a slightly more rustic one!

This cake was so much fun to make, particularly when we got to eat all of the left over fruit!

So here it is... Our 4 tier Victoria Sponge cake with berries :)

Pretty in Pink!

Hi Cupcake Fans,

With Valentine's Day looming, I thought I would post a pic of some pretty pink cupcakes that we made for a couple last weekend.

In March 2010 we were contacted by a chap who wanted us to make 15 cupcakes spelling out "Will you marry me?" for him to propose to his girlfriend. You know how we love a good proposal story! (evidence: click here ) A few days later he got in touch to let us know that they both loved the cupcakes and that she had said YES!!

They then got in touch to ask us to do their wedding cupcake tower this June, how exciting! The picture above shows the sample box of cupcakes that we made for them, containing vanilla, chocolate, lemon and chai cupcakes!

Corporate Cupcake Gift Boxes!

Cupcake Demonstrations at Kooks Unlimited in Richmond

Hi Cupcake Fans!

As many of you will know, the Cupcaker has recently become a resident of the wonderful area of Kew Gardens. In my exploration of the local area, I stumbled across the phenomenal Kooks Unlimited, who have a Cookery Equipment store as well as a Bakeware Studio on Eton Street in Central Richmond.

The Bakeware Studio sells absolutely everything a keen baker may need for baking or decorating cakes, cookies, cakepops... You name it, they sell it! The store has a beautiful baking bar at the rear of the shop floor, and we are delighted to say that The Cupcaker has been invited in to do a series of cupcake demonstrations for the public. The first one will be a "How to Make Valentines Cupcakes" demo and will be taking place at 7pm on the 1st of February 2012. There is only one Wedding List.

I hope you have all had a fab festive period.

Many people get engaged at this time of year, and although it may not be your first concern, the place where you register your wedding list is a very important decision for most couples. There are many options out there, such as registering for people to contribute towards your honeymoon, registering for contributions towards a large item such as a flatscreen TV or a car.

More couples than ever are choosing to live together for a significant time before they tie the knot, meaning that they may well have a fully-stocked home when it comes to gadgets, homewares and decorations. So how do you help out your guests with the dilemma of what to give you if you feel uncomfortable receiving cash?

When I got married, I was keen to register at a store, however as is common with Indian Brides, my parents would be giving me everything I needed for my "new life"; therefore 6 months before our wedding, my mother had already bought me a trio of suitcases which she filled with 3 bed linen sets and 36 towels in 8 sizes (do not ask) as well as boxes full of crockery sets, pans, utensils, appliances and tableware. My husband and I did not need a thing for our new flat..... So we decided to treat ourselves and register at Harrods (http://www.harrods.com/).

Harrods Weddings and Occasions Services have a fantastic option for the couples who would like to register somewhere but would also like flexibility in what they buy. You can go in store and wander around the beautiful crockery, crystal, silver and decorative living departments, drawing up a list of items for your guests to peruse which will be typed up and can be e-mailed to any guests who request it. When a guest purchases items for you, rather than having the item sent out to you or held for you in a depot, the value of the item actually goes on to an account which is set up in the couple's name. If you wish, when an item is bought for you by a guest, it can be re-added to the list for someone else to contribute to.

Once your event has passed and your list is closed, you will receive a summary of all purchases as well as a store card, credited with the monetary value of all of the gifts and contributions from all of your guests. This can be spent on any items in any department in store. As many of Harrods' wares go on sale in January and July, often waiting to purchase something that was on your original list can mean that you can get it for half price a few months later, leaving you with more money to spend in the Shoe Boudoir! (My husband does not need to know about that last bit).

If you are worried about making your guests spend heaps if you register at Harrods, fear not! The Cookshop has a huge variety of cookery gadgets from £15 upwards, and we had lots of cookery books on there too which started at £8.99. The store really does have many items in everyone's budget, so there is no need to fret.

The timing of this post could not be better! Not only does Harrods have a sale on at the moment, but they have an extra 10% off everything in store tomorrow for cardholders. Last time I checked we still had enough on our card for the shiny Kitchenaid Artisan Mixer.... On sale and an EXTRA 10% off?! Who could resist?

Flavour of the month: Chai Cupcake

It is with great pride that we announce that our new Chai Cupcake is the flavour of the month for December 2011!

The Chai Cupcake combines the tastes of tea and exotic spices with the wonderful moist texture of our signature sponge. The sponge is made with Chai spices, and the buttercream is a mix of caramel, cinnamon and Chai spice. It has a very festive taste and is perfect with a cup of tea!

Denise and Charles get married at The Bingham

Hello Crumbs Fans,

On this wet "Wedding Wednesday" I thought I would blog about a personal favourite wedding client for whom we made a cupcake tower last weekend.

Denise and Charles got married by the River Thames at The Bingham in Richmond. It is a stunning venue with a wonderful terrace that allows you to bask in the sun and they were extremely lucky with the weather on their big day!

Denise had requested that we make cupcakes in a colour scheme that would match her blooms as well as possible. We had suggested that she could tie the cupcakes in well with her flowers by asking her florist to leave some buds behind for us to add to the cupcake stand.

Denise got in touch on Monday with the following comments:

"Thank you for the wonderful cupcakes, they looked amazing and went down an absolute treat. You did a super job with the colours and they complemented the flowers beautifully.

Hello "Crumbs!" Fans!

Last week we were contacted by a company called HiDrive who were exhibiting at ExCel and wanted to have some cupcakes at their stand in order to entice the masses over! Their website can be found here and they are on Twitter (@HiDriveFree).

They opted for mini cupcakes, and wanted their mascot, their logo and their catchphrase to be on the cupcakes. These pictures show what happened next!

The client was chuffed with the cupcakes, reporting that "They are amazing and are going down a storm!"

Karen's Baby Shower!

Last weekend we were asked to make some cupcakes by Bhav, who wanted to take something special to her friends Karen's baby shower. Karen loves cupcakes, and is expecting a little girl, and so our pink baby-girl themed cupcakes were perfect!

Karen was kind enough to send us an e-mail a few days later to tell us how much she loved the cupcakes! She said "They were so gorgeous that I could hardly bring myself to eat them. However once I did, I could hardly stop!"

At Crumbs we are proud to announce that we have teamed up with the Ceramics Cafe in Kew Village to provide a fun activity for children.

As you will all know, we run Cupcake Decorating classes for Children. Our new "Cupcakes and Ceramics Classes" combine the Cupcake Decoration with fun Ceramic Painting activities too!

This combination allows children to take part in two creative, fun activities under one roof, meaning that there is more variety and the children are kept interested and stimulated! Children will leave with their decorated cupcakes as well as the ceramic items, both of which they created themselves!

Hi Cupcake Lovers!

As Halloween fast approaches I just thought I would write a little blog post about why I love Halloween so much.

I love holidays which allow people to get creative. Yes, you can also get creative at Christmas/Valentine's Day, but in my opinion, there is more pressure on those holidays. There is still 2.5 months to go until Christmas and already the shops are full of Christmas goodies and people have begun to plan menus!! It is insane!

Halloween, on the other hand, is a more low-key holiday, however it really brings out your imagination. Costumes, decorations, you can really let your creativity run wild without the stress of shopping and wondering if you have got the perfect gift for your loved ones!!

Reveal the gender of your baby in STYLE!

The latest addition to the list of wonderful cakes made at Crumbs is something for the Mamas! If you are having a baby shower, at which you want to reveal the gender of your baby, then give us a call and we can make you a gender reveal cake!

All you have to do is let us know the gender of the baby, and we will produce a fabulous cake for you. The surface of the cake will be made in neutral colours, such as ivory, creme, yellow, green. When you cut the cake, it will reveal either pink or blue sponge inside, depending on whether you are expecting a girl or a boy! Cue gasps, hugs and cuddles, as well as satisfied guests who are sure to love our cake!

We can also make cupcakes for you, with neutral coloured buttercream, and either pink or blue sponge.

Last night Crumbs! was invited to provide cupcakes for a party at Tuatara Club on the Swanky Kings Rd in Chelsea. The party is a weekly event called Fundraise Mondays, organised with Francis Boulle and Fredrik Ferrier from Made in Chelsea. Profits from the events go to Sentebale, Prince Harry's charity.

The rain did not deter the beautiful people who attended the party, making it yet another successful night for the charitable pair from recent hit show Made in Chelsea. Our mini-cupcakes went down a treat, with many chelsea-ites asking for details of the business for future orders.

Tuatara, which used to be called Mamilanji, is an exclusive new venue which comprises a large Main Club Room, a more intimate Chillout Bar and a beautiful Roof Terrace that evokes memories of the Balearics! (tuataraclub.com)

Cupcakes for Sentebale, Prince Harry's charity.

We were recently contacted by Fredrik Ferrier and Francis Boulle from Made in Chelsea regarding their weekly charity events at Tuatara Club on Kings Road, Chelsea. They have organised a weekly event called "Fundraise Mondays" which takes place on the roof terrace of Tuatara, with gorgeous sunset views over the Kings Road (tuataraclub.com).

All profits from their events go to Sentebale, a charity set up by Prince Harry in 2006 to help vulnerable children and youngsters in Lesotho. You can learn more about Sentebale here: www.sentebale.org

Cupcakes for East Africa

Hello Crumbs! Fans,

Earlier this year Crumbs! Couture organised a campaign called Cupcakes for Japan to raise money for the British Red Cross relief efforts in the aftermath of the Japan Earthquake/Tsunami. We were helped by so many kind people who organised sales in their offices as well as wonderful cupcake makers who donated hundreds of cupcakes to be sold. In total we raised £4271.25 for the British Red Cross which is a fantastic effort!

A combination of conflict and drought have meant that people in East Africa are currently facing crisis conditions that have left them malnourished, displaced and in need of medical attention. Save the Children and Oxfam, among other charities, have launched East Africa Appeals which can be seen here:

At Crumbs! Couture we have been SO blessed with orders/ features and publicity in 2011. This is why we would like to do something special for our brides in order to say "Thanks!".

As you know we are partial to a competition and our last competition ended during the Glastonbury Festival which we were lucky enough to provide cupcakes for. Last week we put our thinking caps on and decided that our next competition should be for a lucky couple who are planning their wedding. As many of you will know, I got married in August 2010 and I LOVE all things wedding related so am really looking forward to reading your stories. To start you off I will tell you how my husband proposed to me in Feb 2010. We had been together nearly 4 years and I am awfully hard to surprise. I knew that a proposal was on the cards and I was being really annoying; each time my other half said we were going out I would say "make sure you have the ring in your pocket!". Valentines Day was looming and so my mind was in overdrive, so my other half knew that surprising me was key! 2 days before valentines day, I returned home from a day of baking to find the house dark and the alarm disabled. I walked in to find a trail of candles, rose petals, gifts and cute messages leading me up to my bedroom which faces over the garden. The final message told me to look out of the window, where I saw the words "Marry me" written in fairy lights and my sweetheart on one knee.... The rest is history!!

Pamper your mind, body and soul at The May Fair Hotel

Wedding planning can be very stressful. In order to look and feel your best on your big day it is important to schedule lots of events that incorporate relaxing and pampering. A spa treat with your Fiance will provide valuable time for the two of you to unwind without being surrounded by table plans or invitation samples. Alternatively, a spa treat with your best friends and bridesmaids is the perfect girlie getaway that can also be incorporated into the Hen/Bachelorette festivities. If you are looking for a place that has gorgeous rooms, a blissful spa and a trendy bar, look no further than The May Fair Hotel on the corner of Berkeley Street and Stratton Street.

Back in August 2010, my Pre-Wedding Party was held at The May Fair Hotel, in their beautiful ballroom, The Crystal Room. It was the perfect venue for my Henna Party as we had chosen an "Arabian Nights" theme and the room lent itself so well to our planned decor.

As part of the package provided for Brides and Grooms who hold a wedding at The May Fair, the hotel always generously include a stay in one of their rooms. During my 9-day wedding extravaganza we were not able to stay on the night of the Pre-Wedding party as we had to go home and actually prepare for the wedding which was 2 days later!

After an extremely busy period over Easter, my husband and I decided to finally use our complimentary stay at The May Fair a fortnight ago. The wonderful Nargis from the events team organised our room for us, and I called ahead and booked a Treat for Two at the May Fair Spa. We were expecting to have a deluxe double room so you can imagine our surprise when we walk in to our room and see that we have been booked into the stunning Schiaparelli Suite!

I can honestly say that the Schiaparelli Suite is the largest hotel room I have ever stayed in, at 1492 sq ft in total. It had very unique decor and furnishings, breathtaking design elements and stunning sculptures and art. The suite had a dining area that can seat 8 people, a lounge that had a giant TV, amazing speakers, a wall-mounted Bang and Olufsen CD player, an i-pod dock, an integrated fireplace and curtains that are controlled by remote control. The bathroom was the size of most London apartments, featuring a giant illuminated rain shower and a limestone egg bath. My husband and I were left wondering if there had been some sort of a mistake and that perhaps this suite was actually reserved for a celeb and we were actually meant to be in a more modest room down the hall.

The suite, which can comfortably host a drinks reception for up to 50 people, has been used for meetings, press launches as well as a film location. In my opinion, the Schiaparelli Suite would be the perfect room for a girlie weekend or hen party, which brings me on to the spa...

Once my husband and I were able to tear ourselves away from running around the suite like children on Christmas morning, we realised we had to be down in the spa for our couples treatments. The Spa is on the lower ground floor of the hotel, meaning that you need not go through the lobby to access it. This meant that we could go straight down to the spa in our robes and slippers. Upon arrival to the spa we were shown around all of the facilities and then told to make ourselves comfortable in the Relaxation Room where we would be collected for our treatments. A quick peek into the ladies changing rooms revealed luxurious products and top brand straighteners for guests to use. The relaxation room has refreshments for guests and has a calming atmosphere that encourages you to unwind.

We were soon called for our Cleopatra Bathing Experience, which left my husband and I feeling refreshed and cleansed. This treatment lasted about 45 minutes, after which we were back in the relaxation room for a quick drink of water and some dried fruits. Then we were led away to our couples massage which left us both feeling as though we were floating above earth looking down on the busy Mayfair area from a cloud! My massage was done by Karolina and my Husband's massage was done by Shauni. Both therapists asked us to let them know if we had any particular areas we wanted them to concentrate on and provided a very attentive service. The treatment was then topped off with champagne and strawberries in the relaxation room.

When we finally left the spa, we wandered back up to our suite, at which point I commented that I hadn't felt so relaxed and pampered since our honeymoon. The rest of the afternoon was spent eating The May Fair's delicious room service and chilling out on the huge sofas in our suite! The May Fair also has a very trendy bar which is great for celeb-spotting.

Our stay was topped off with a delicious breakfast served on the giant dining table in our suite. All in all, it was an amazing stay and I only wish we could have stayed longer to fully benefit from all that the Schiaparelli Suite, as well as the May Fair Hotel in general, had to offer.

I cannot recommend The May Fair Hotel highly enough for any bride who wants a chance to escape from matrimonial mayhem and have some time out with her hubby-to-be or her girlies. It goes above and beyond everything you would expect from a Luxury London Hotel and has to be seen to be believed. Once you eventually tear yourselves away and check out, it is only when you step out of the door onto a busy street that you will remember you are actually in busy Mayfair rather in an Far-Eastern Spa Resort.

Hello Crumbs! Couture Fans!!!

I thought I would write a little post to say hello to you all after a prolonged absence for just over a week.

Some of you may know that my Dad had a stroke last Tuesday lunchtime, an event which has put my world into a bit of a spin since then. It was so out of the blue, he has never had a history of stroke. The 19th of April is actually the anniversary of my first date with my husband, and so the day started off with us planning a meal that evening, discussing the hotel bookings for our upcoming 10-day trip to France which was due to start on Good Friday, as well as being deep in admin and baking for our campaign Cupcakes for Japan.

I had been in the kitchen in Chingford preparing for a Cupcakes for Japan sale that was scheduled for Weds 20th April at Morgan Stanley. In just a split second everything changed. My dad was with me having a lunch break when his stroke occurred, and each day since I have thanked God that I was there as I was able to spot that something was wrong and rush him to hospital. The initial behaviour differences were so subtle that a stranger would not have realised that there was anything wrong with him, however with a stroke, time is so crucial in saving that person.

Thanks to my love of TV I had often seen the "Act FAST" advert on the telly and ran through the test with my dad, as I was unsure if the episode was a low blood sugar issue or if he was having a stroke. I called an ambulance as my instincts told me that something was definitely wrong, and that it was more than a low-sugar issue. The paramedics arrived in 5 minutes but those 5 minutes felt like a lonely eternity as I was so scared for my dad, who was slurring his words by now, and acting very confused and unsteady. I was adamant not to cry or get too het up as this would only worry my Dad more. The paramedics confirmed my suspicions that he was having a stroke and we took him to Queens Hospital in Romford that has a Specialist Stroke Unit. The journey from Chingford to Romford, despite actually only being about 10 mins as we went with sirens and flashing lights, felt about an hour long!!

Once we reached the hospital they rushed my dad off to the "Resus" area and I was told to wait in the family waiting room until called for. At this point I called my mum who was at work in her sugery in Willesden (she is a GP) and broke the news to her, telling her that Dad had had a mild stroke. I then called my husband who was at work, and told him to leave immediately, get to my mum and to drive her to Romford as there was just no way that she would be able to make that 2 hour journey alone after having heard the news.

When I was allowed to see my Dad, the doctors were doing various test on him, and they told me that his stroke had progressed to being "moderately serious". He couldnt move his left side, couldnt feel anyone touching his left side and his speech was almost unintelligible. The trauma team could see that I was on the verge of cracking and was really upset, yet I told them I didnt want my dad to see me crying. I was asked to give various consents about "clot-busting" drugs that needed to be administered which had some unmentionable side effects, however they were hopeful that these drugs would help my dad.

The feeling of loneliness that I experienced while alone in a hospital in Romford while my loved ones were stuck on the North Circular is something that I never want to go through again! At this point I was sat wondering if my Dad would need a carer for the rest of his life, whether his grandkids would ever see him how he used to be or if they would only know him as a person whose speech could not be understood and couldnt walk.

My Dad's stroke occurred at 3.45 pm and he was admitted to hospital at 4.30pm. Finally, at 8pm, my husband and mum reached the hospital, and that is when I broke down. I think the feeling of relief that I had my husband there, as well as my mum with her knowledge of medicine made me feel like I didnt have to hold it back any more.

My dad was moved to a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit, where he was to be monitored for the next few days. We left him at 9pm, we all felt totally numb, and I went back to the kitchen to lock up after my speedy exit with my dad in the ambulance. My husband and I stayed with my mum that night, knowing that she must not be alone, and that it should be me that calls my brother in Hong Kong to let him know the bad news.

We slept as much as we could through tears and fear. The next morning I was relieved to hear that the amazing Natalie from Sweet Things was taking control of the Cupcakes for Japan sale at MS so that was one less thing for me to fret about. We drove back to Romford, not sure of what state we would find my dad in, and we were so delighted to see that he was actually sitting up in his chair drinking tea and having toast for breakfast. The consultants told us that he had made a great recovery overnight and that he had responded very well to the clot-busting injection. His speech was still not back to 100%, and he was having trouble eating, but fundamentally he was alright, he had regained feeling to his left side and could walk, go to the bathroom unaided and could dress himself.

The best news of all came on Thursday, just 48 hours after my Dad's stroke, when we were told that we could take him home! The doctors felt that he had recovered physically to the extent that he no longer needed to be in hospital, and that the rest of his recovery involved rest, which was best at home. Since then he has gone from strength to strength physically and has even reached the point of boredom as he is not allowed to drive for 6 weeks.

My husband and I cancelled our holiday which has resulted in a remarkably empty diary for me!! This has meant that I can spend time at home with my parents, and we have played lots of games of cards and watched many episodes of Only Fools sand Horses! Now that things are returning to normal a little I am back on blog duties and have even contacted The Stroke Association to discuss our next fundraising campaign!!

We were asked to produce some of these cupcakes for the lovely folk over at the This Morning studio, as they had a feature on Royal Wedding Memorabilia. It was great to see our cupcakes and vintage crockery on the show this morning, however I am not to sure about the Will Lookalike they had.

A couple of weeks ago we were lucky enough to be given the opportunity to provide cupcakes for the Oasis Summer Press Day at their HQ on Regent Street, London. Their new line of clothes has a very Vintage-inspired feel, and so they wanted cupcake designs to complement this.

We were happy to provide them with some sweet treats, which were sampled by their high-profile guests, such as The Saturdays, Alexandra Burke, Wonderland, Sunday Girl and Alice Gold.

Hello Cupcake-lovers!

A massive earthquake, the seventh largest recorded in history, struck the east coast of Japan on Friday 11 March.

The earthquake, measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale, triggered a tsunami which hit the east coast of Japan with 7-metre-high waves, leaving a trail of destruction.

At times like this we all wonder what we can do to help.

The British Red Cross

The British Red Cross has launched a Japan Tsunami Appeal, details of which can be found here: http://www.redcross.org.uk/Donate-Now/Make-a-single-donation/Japan-Tsunami-Appeal

In order to raise money for the British Red Cross, I would like to hold a number of cupcake sales within the city's Law Firms, Banks and Corporations. ALL PROCEEDS of these sales will go to the British Red Cross, and they have confirmed us as certified fundraisers for them.

What YOU can do to help:

Cupcake companies: If you could choose a cupcake sale which suits you in terms of the date and location, and donate min. 100 cupcakes, that would be FAB! The more Cupcake Sales you can donate to, the better.

Your business cards and details will be displayed at the sale so everyone will know which yummy cupcakes were donated by you. Your company details will be listed on all e-mails and mailshots that are sent around to publicise the events. What better way to have your company details given directly to many of the city's professional elite?! And the best thing is, it is all for an amazing cause.

Individuals/Firms: Do you work in an office (Law firm, Bank, Accountancy Firm, Consultancy Firm) that is large enough to host a Cupcakes for Japan sale? If so, please get in touch with your Charity Event Coordinators ASAP and let us know who we need to contact to organise the event.

After two years at a City law firm, Harpreet Baura traded corporate lawfor chocolate icing. Here, she describes her journey from lawyer to cupcaker

Prior to March 2009, I could be found behind a desk at one of London'spremier law firms. But baking had always been one of my passions, and it was atthis point that I decided to leave the City behind and pursue my dream ofestablishing a cupcake company.

It was time to say goodbye to soft offers, mergers and corporate law andhello to soft sponge, margarine and cocoa powder. No longer strutting down thecorridors in a suit and stilettos, I can now be found wearing an apron, usuallywith a smear or two of icing sugar on my face. Meetings are now called tastingsand conference calls still remain, but what could possibly be more fun thandiscussing wedding cupcake towers with a bride and groom-to-be?

I read economics at University College of London, after which I did theGraduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course at BPP Law School. I thenjoined Linklaters as a trainee in March 2007. Upon qualifying, I decided to setup a web-based cupcake company called Crumbs!Couture Cupcakes. Since I started the company, we have been luckyenough to provide cupcakes for a high-profile celebrity wedding and be featuredin numerous glossy magazines.

I am from a family of professionals, so there was never a considerationof not going to university and entering a professional career path. I leftschool wanting to go into investment banking. During my summer vacation whilereading economics, I did an eight-week internship at HSBC Investment anddecided banking wasn't the right fit for me. I then considered a career in law,applied to law school and secured a place. It was not until I left law schoolthat I obtained a training contract at Linklaters. They reimbursed my lawschool fees and allowed me to start my training contract six months later.

Leaving law

During my second seat at Linklaters, my personal life took a tumble andI found myself in quite a severe depression. By no means am I saying that lifeas a lawyer led to my clinical depression, but it certainly wasn't theenvironment in which to recover. During my final seat I made the decision totake a break from law in order to get my health back on track.

I had interviewed at some firms, hoping to return to the law after sixmonths, and was offered a role as an associate at a US firm, which was due tostart six months after leaving Linklaters. In the interim, I decided to set upthe cupcake company as I had always loved baking - but I had every intention ofreturning to law after a little break. What happened next was totally beyond mypredictions.

Setting up shop

Upon finding a property, I then had to turn it into a kitchen fit toproduce the prettiest cupcakes in London. The fact that we were in a recessionat the time actually helped, as the economic climate meant that I received muchmore competitive quotes for the work to get the premises ready. The friends andcontacts I had made at Linklaters helped me to build up business, as theirorders and reviews were invaluable for Crumbs! in its early stages. My firstretailing took place from a stall at Brick Lane's Sunday Upmarket, where I soldcupcakes one weekend a month. Even from these humble beginnings, Crumbs!secured a following on Twitter and Facebook.

Among the highlights since setting up the company are being featured inVogue as well as being asked to provide cupcakes to be taken to India for KatyPerry and Russell Brand's wedding. It is also so satisfying when we providecupcakes for charity events, with the proceeds from sales going to the help thecause. We have done charity cupcakes for Help a London Child, Cancer ResearchUK and

The Prince's Trust.

I faced a lot of criticism when I left what was seen as a prestigiousjob in order to spend my days in the kitchen. Many people couldn't get theirhead around what I was doing. I had people speculating behind my back about thepossibility that I had been sacked or that I couldn't get a job after qualifying.It was all fairly ignorant but, given that I hadn't ever advertised the factthat I had been depressed, many people didn't understand why I had left.

I often deliver cupcakes in the City to offices and banks, and it doesmake me very nostalgic. I do miss the buzz of life in the financial world, butthen I remind myself of how much I prefer the actual work I do now to the workof a lawyer, and I am placated.

Lessons from the City

Running my own business has meant that I have had to learn a huge amountvery quickly. My legal background has helped me in terms of copyright with mywebsite as well as being able to stand my ground when suppliers have breachedcontracts. I was lucky enough to have some money saved while I was working atLinklaters and so this meant that I didn't have to take out any loans whenstarting up Crumbs!

My job can still be very stressful and it still involves long hours.There are huge nerves and a lot of stress involved in doing exhibitions such asthe National Wedding Show. And we have also had to work through the nightpreparing cupcakes for photoshoots. There are often weekends at the peak of thewedding season where we have to prepare and set up about 800 cupcakes in oneweekend. Law does teach you how to deal with stressful deadlines and pressure,which prepares you well for the discipline required to run your own business.

The joy of cupcakes

Being able to wake up and spend the day doing something so creative isperfect for me. I have always been an artistic person and I think I prefer thefact that a day's work can now be shown with something tangible.

I got married in 2010 and it was a bit of an extravaganza, as manyIndian weddings can be. We had three months to plan a wedding that incorporatedsix events and, had I still been a lawyer, this would have been extremelytough. As a result of running my own business, I was able to juggle my day sothat I could visit potential venues and go for dress fittings, and we managedto pull the wedding off in time. Before you ask, the answer is yes, I did makemy own wedding cupcake tower.

The cake industry is very dynamic; it's great fun to be constantly developingnew products or seeing what the new trends are. We have recently launched aproduct called The Cake Pop, and last year's big trend, the Whoopie Pie, isstill going strong.

Advice to others

The best advice I can offer is to be realistic about how long it willtake for your new venture to be profitable and make sure you have a large cashbuffer to keep you afloat until you are well in the black. If your new venturewill mean that you will spend a lot more time alone, think through whether youwill be able to cope with that.

Life is too short to not follow your dreams, but be sure that your dreamis sustainable when you introduce it to your real life.

We were asked to provide cupcakes for Louisa's baby shower as she is expecting a baby boy in April. The Mama-to-be is gluten-intolerant and so we had to make sure that the guest of honour was able to enjoy the sweet treats too! All of the cupcakes with blue icing were gluten-free wheat-free cupcakes, which apparently tasted just as light and fluffy as the regular ones, HURRAH!!

As you will all be aware, Valentine's Day is looming. Does this thought fill some of you with dread? Fear not!! The Cupcaker is here to help!

Forget about flowers, overpriced meals and lingerie. Flowers don’t taste too good, and I have yet to meet a man who looks good in a lacy black thong! This year, it is time to remember that LOVE IS SWEET! What better way to show your love than send cupcakes?

I have always found Valentines Day extremely clichéd and think that there is a disproportionate amount of pressure put on men, whereas women can sometimes get away scot free!! Why do we, as women, persevere for equality in other areas of life, and then allow this disparity to exist on the romantic holidays during the year such as anniversaries and Valentine's Day?!

This year we hope to have as many orders of yummy cupcakes going out to the Men of the world, along with the usual lovely orders for the ladies. We are producing gift boxes of 4, 6, 12 and 24 cupcakes! Cupcakes and cake-pops can also be arranged into “bouquets” and delivered to your loved one. The price depends on the level of decoration, as well as whether or not you would like us to write your Valentine a message on their cupcakes. As a guide, cupcakes are roughly £1.50-2 each.

We can deliver during the day on Sunday 13^th Feb as well as on the 14^th of February itself. Delivery costs will depend on the drop-off postcode.

Are cupcakes the new wedding cake?

In the last couple of years, an increasing number of couples are choosing to have a tower of cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake. What are the reasons for this curious little cake form becoming so popular? I will explore below.

· Having cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake is a different thing to do, and in an age when all brides and grooms are seeking to break from tradition, it certainly is the way to go if you want your guests’ tongues to be wagging about your cake.

· Cupcake towers often work out much cheaper than going for a traditional wedding cake.

· Many brides are doing as much as possible for their weddings themselves! In this age of austerity, the number of DIY brides out there is phenomenal! Cupcake towers are much easier for a bride and bridesmaids to make together.

· As a cupcake tower incorporates lots of little cakes, the bride and groom can have a variety of flavours and different decorations on their cakes, rather than having to limit themselves with a traditional wedding cake.

· Serving a cupcake to each of the guests is much easier than and not as messy as cutting a layer cake and having to serve this up. With a cupcake tower or a cupcake bar, the guests can help themselves to their treat, so no serving is required.

· By having cupcakes, each of the guests actually receives a perfectly formed product, rather than a cut piece of cake, which is what they would get if a traditional cake had been served.

· If some small boxes or bags are kept on the table, guests may also take their cupcakes home, meaning that they will double up as a wedding favour too! This will undoubtedly save the couple money.

· With cupcakes, the decorative possibilities are endless. At Crumbs! we offer brides and grooms to personalise their cupcakes for them, either with their initials, with their wedding date, or even with each guest’s name on, so that they can be displayed at each place-setting.

· Having said all this, there is often still the option of having a topcake on the top tier of your stand, so that the bride and groom can still feel as though they still have the ceremonial element of cake-cutting.

Hello Crumbs Fans!

The Cupcaker has been very busy! We made some bespoke cupcakes for Boux Avenue, which is a new lingerie company that opens its doors in Spring 2011. Boux Avenue is the latest venture of Theo Paphitis, owner of Ryman and La Senza and most famous for being a Dragon from Dragon's Den. They were cute cupcakes with underwear, bows and flowers on!

It seems that The Boux Ave team liked the cupcakes as much as we did, and they wrote this lovely post about us! Please see below!

Celebs Love Crumbs!

Back in May 2010 we were contacted by a wedding coordinator who asked us if we could provide cupcakes for a "high profile" wedding that was set to take place later in the year. We were told that the wedding was likely to be in October, and that the cupcakes may be flown abroad.

We were given basic details on the type of cupcakes that were required, and I was then asked to sign a confidentiality agreement, agreeing to keep the details of the forthcoming celebrity wedding a secret.

Now that the wedding has passed I can confirm that it was none other than the wedding of Katy Perry and Russell Brand which took place in Rajasthan, India. Our cupcakes were taken over 2 days before the nuptials and went down a storm with the couple and their guests.

We had feedback from the couple which included the words "Show-stopping" "Delisch" and "Amazeballs".

About the Cupcaker:

Prior to March 2009, the Cupcaker could be found behind a desk in one of London’s premier Law firms. Baking had always been one of her passions, and it was at this point that the Cupcaker decided to leave the city behind and instead pursue her dream of establishing a cupcake company!

It was time to say “goodbye!” to soft offers, mergers and corporate law and “hello!” to soft sponge, margarine and cocoa powder! No longer strutting down the corridors in a suit and stilettos, she can now be found wearing an apron, usually with a smear or two of icing sugar on her face.

Hello Crumbs! fans!

I am so excited to announce the launch of a new product at Crumbs! We are venturing a little further than cupcakes and are now the proud producers of Crumbs cake pops!

Cake pops are basically a coated cake ball on a stick, so sort of a cross between a cake and a lollipop. They are SO much fun to make, and even more fun to eat!

We coat ours in either a sugar coating or a belgian chocolate coating, the choice is yours! The sponge inside can be any flavour you like. For a fun surprise, why not order coloured sponge for the inside of your cake pop? They can be adorned with a huge variety of decorations; the possibilities truly are endless!

As you can see from the pictures below, the cake pops can be arranged in a vase or flowepot to form a bouquet. They are so much tastier than a bouquet of flowers!! They are a great gift for sharing, and would go down a treat on Valentines Day!

The cake pops can be wrapped individually and tied with a cute little ribbon- this will make a fabulous wedding/ party favour!

Crumbs Couture Cupcakes London and the British Lung Foundation

Crumbs! is excited to announce that we will be helping the British Lung Foundation by providing free cupcakes for their London Marathon post-race reception on the 17th April 2011.

The lovely Nicola from the British Lung Foundation contacted me late last year to tell me about the 120 runners who are participating in the London Marathon on behalf of the charity.

We are hoping to incorporate their logo of a "red balloon" on the cupcakes that we supply them. We think they will be a wonderful treat for the runners and other guests at the event.

Crumbs Couture Cupcakes London and Kiss FM DJ Neev

We were recently contacted by Kiss FM’s DJ Neev and asked to provide a cupcake tower for her 30th Birthday Party at London’s Swanky Studio Valbonne Nightclub. Neev is known as the Voice of Kiss FM and has a very popular daily lunchtime show. Given that we listen to her show every day bopping around while we bake in the Crumbs! Kitchen, this was a huge honour!!

Her taste in cupcakes clearly matches her DJing ability, hence her choosing Crumbs Couture Cupcakes! Neev asked us to make her a tower in a pink colour scheme which can be seen below.

She recently got in touch with the following comments:
